Petey

  • Petey
  • 8 years old
  • Male
  • 13 pounds
  • Chihuahua
  • House trained

Looking for a leggy, model-esque gentleman who is past his clubbing days and into the more refined, quiet aspects of his life?

Look no further! Petey is ready to review your application and consider you for permanent placement as his Chief Chihuahua Protector.

Traumatized by his owner’s passing and left in a shelter to die, Petey, who was neither trained nor socialized, is one pup in need of patience and practice, tenderness and time.

After weeks of being in his foster home, he finally trusted his foster mom enough to crawl up next to her and solicit pets by rubbing his nose against her ankles. She promptly reinforced his welcome behavior by saying “yes!” in a high-pitched voice to reassure him that she was “safe” and wouldn’t harm him. Now he’s most comfortable in her company (she alone can touch him), pushing his whole body into her, crawling under the sheets to be near her, and resting his head across her legs. And while he’s her faithful little shadow and quick to wag or chase his own tail when he’s happy, he still avoids contact with her husband and children.

At his best when part of a small doggy pack, he enjoys playing with them in the backyard, and although he’s new to walks, he loves them and is quickly mastering his leash skills. Disinterested in toys, he’s extremely interested in and motivated by boiled or baked chicken, deli meat and cheese, hot dogs and freeze-dried meat treats, and is learning to take them gently from his foster mom’s hand. He knows “let’s go outside” when it’s potty time, and yet, in spite of knowing his name, he responds to it only occasionally.

At work to reduce his alert barking, with much to learn and much to give, Petey is best suited to a quiet home with a securely fenced yard in a quiet neighborhood, preferably with a small, confident dog, and extremely nurturing adopters who will patiently bolster his self-esteem, continue his socialization with people, and perfect his leash training and other commands in exchange for his own enduring loyalty and love.

Petey is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped. To meet or adopt Petey, fill out an application and a volunteer will contact you shortly.
