You have a new dog in your house, what should you feed them?
|
Making sure you are feeding your dog a healthy and balanced diet is a top priority for the new pup in your life. Their diet can affect their energy, life span and overall quality of life!
To begin with, know what food is good for your dog and what food is toxic. Many common human foods are poisonous to dogs and can cause long term health concerns. The graphic to the left covers only some items! If you are wondering if your dog can eat a certain food, make sure to research it before letting your dog have some. Always consult your vet about your dogs specific dietary needs. Some dogs require specialized diets, if you are noticing your dog is low energy, having unusual bowel movements, or is throwing up, consult your vet on how best to address the concern. Some dogs have allergies to foods that are commonly found in dog food, they will most likely prescribe a diet or ask you to use a "process of elimination" strategy to target what the allergy is. If your pup is older, consider getting supplements to that can help with their mobility. We love anything with green lipped mussels for our seniors! Green lipped mussels have naturally occurring vitamins that are very good in assisting our dogs joints. Our dogs love to chew and it can be very beneficial for their dental health to have something to chew on. We have all seen cartoons and media with the classic "dog with a bone" image. The truth is, bones aren't always the best chew for our dogs. Cooked bones become brittle and can splinter and injure our dogs if they swallow them. Raw bones are safe, but they are much harder and can break your dogs teeth. Good alternatives for bones are dental chews like "Whimsy", "Greenies" or "Milk Bones". For a long lasting chew to keep your dog entertained try a natural alternative like a bully stick or rawhide. |
